Hayate the Combat Butler Chapter 516 Review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Hayate the Combat Butler Chapter 516Ayumu gets up, eats breakfast with her family, goes to school, and attends class, taking copious notes. After school, Souya inquires if Ayumu is in any clubs. She’s not, nor is she interested in being a club manager. She does observe the baseball club practice for a while before heading to work.

At Cafe Donguri (where she works), it is quite, so she studies the menu. She sees an entry for Guatemala, so she asks her boss about it since she doesn’t know if this is a type of coffee bean or just naming the region the coffee is from. He cracks a joke that it is a new mobile suit.

Returning home in the evening, she eats her dinner. She then takes a bath, watches TV, plays with her smartphone, but does not do her homework or study her notes. She gets a text from Hayate, which pleases her since he’s on a school trip in Las Vegas. He ends up asking her if she wants sand or toilet paper as a souvenir. She opts for the toilet paper.

Thoughts/Review:

You know, with a chapter like this, I suddenly found myself going, “Man, Ayumu deserves a massive, big break.”

I’ve long been a Hayate x Athena shipper, but seeing Ayumu’s normal life and how much pleasure she got from a simple text from Hayate, I began to waver. I mean, with such an ordinary girl, how can one dislike her? As such, there’s a part of me that thinks that maybe, just maybe, Ayumu should end up with Hayate. I mean, she deserves happiness, and had things not gone the way they did (Hayate ending up working for Nagi), maybe Hayate and Ayumu would have been a couple.

Further, Ayumu has been the bravest of all the girls in that she’s the only one to confess to Hayate. And of all the girls, while she’d be disappointed if Hayate didn’t choose her, she’d be happy for Hayate and his choice.

So from that aspect, I want something good to happen to Ayumu. I’d be OK with that good thing being her hooking up with Hayate.

I did enjoy how the chapter made a point of how Ayumu does not fall into the various anime/manga tropes such as the character that oversleeps and has to rush around, or the character that runs into another student, etc.

In the end, this was a sweet chapter where Ayumu gets to be the star. I loved it!

i was not expecting any chapters even this week. ayumu chapters are fun break. she was surely missed with the school trip and all.

hamster looks adorable in love. her thought process is impaired and she is blushing over hayate asking her if she wants sand or toilet paper. she says she wants later, really? yup she can be that sweet. i like that about her she is straight forward and honest about her feelings. this is a good point because our combat butler does not do subtle. she definitely deserves to win with all the efforts she has put. with harem its hard to pick one…..hmmm

  2. I can understand your sentiments. Storytelling issues aside however, I think Ayumu’s problem is that she’s far too nice and easily satisfied. Her greatest strength (being nice) is at the same time her biggest character flaw. You can see it right here in this chapter. She is quite happy just to receive a LINE message from Hayate and she could have been a little bit angrier at Hayate for even asking her that question, but she can’t. It’s not just about her feelings for him — she’s simply far too much of a “nice girl” to get angry or stay angry at anyone.

In a way, she is a bit like Izumi if Izumi hadn’t been associated with the SC trio.

Nice (and pretty) girls shouldn’t have to finish last though. 😉

      • Well, Nagi is nice and pretty too (and cute), ya know :D. (Especially if you can look past the now defunct tsundere archetype that she used to fall squarely into. Hayate’s really the one with the darker personality.) Everyone except 1 or 2 people seem to want her to finish dead last in the harem race.

I know this discussion had nothing to do with Nagi… but this is just me being me~

yes that is is the point even i dont understand why most people dont like nagi as much. i am not talking about anyone in in particular but mostly i see people portray her as a spoilt brat.that she is but there is also the fact that she is only 13 , orphaned at very young age and has not have much exposure to outside world.

she is lazy, otaku, not most popular, her expressions and i dont care attitude; there are things about her that i can relate to so that is why i like her character so much. despite of having such a terrible past she is not that difficult person.

        • People are stuck with the idea that she’s a typical kugimiya tsundere who hasn’t grown out of the stereotype and associate her with more violent types like Louise. Furthermore, people (at least English-speaking people) want to see explicit romantic development during the course of the manga instead of the subtle implications that Hata has already laid out throughout the series. In short, people are mostly projecting themselves onto Hayate and they want Hata to write the story based on their preconceived standards of love and romance.

It’s pretty obvious when almost everyone gangs up on the ojou-sama (at least in fangroups online) and factually declare their opinions that she’ll never end up with Hayate.

          *End rant*

Tsundere are defunct now? I was unaware.

I felt the same way, but from a different angle… to me, it feels like Hata-sensei has gotten a bit crabby lately. To me, it didn’t come across as an homage to Ayumu as much as it came across as a light poke at those of us who get so caught up in the routines of our lives that we forget to live. (At first I thought it was a poke at Ayumu for being boring to write about, but I think she just happened to be the easiest example on hand.)

As she goes through a day in which the other characters are taking huge risks and experiencing extraordinary adventures, the only things that stand out are: Being considerate to her father, forgetting her handkerchief, getting teased at work, a very “girly” response to a message from the boy she likes, and seeing only the good side when he’s equally rude and considerate.

I just really hope Hata-sensei isn’t subconsciously taking a poke at himself, because he’s imagining that staying in the same genre so long means he’s just a salaryman with a pencil. (・᷄︵・᷅) There’s nothing to be ashamed of in doing one thing extremely well – very few people can be Bo Jackson.

As such, there’s a part of me that thinks that maybe, just maybe, Ayumu should end up with Hayate. I mean, she deserves happiness, and had things not gone the way they did (Hayate ending up working for Nagi), maybe Hayate and Ayumu would have been a couple.

The first part, I could see – adrenaline junkies might think otherwise, but sometimes the best “good ending” after extraordinary adventures is just a quiet space to be normal and happy. But not only were massive events going to catch up to Hayate no matter what, he still has a boatload of issues to finish working out. The façade was already starting to crack, and without Nagi as an excuse to sublimate himself, he’ll have to take a good look at himself soon.

Further, Ayumu has been the bravest of all the girls in that she’s the only one to confess to Hayate.

    Sorry to nitpick, but: Ruka.

And of all the girls, while she’d be disappointed if Hayate didn’t choose her, she’d be happy for Hayate and his choice.

So much for my secret hope that we get a School Days ending. (^_~)

nice thoughts on the chapter. to me it was a switch from the crazy unreal trip to a day in ayumu’s average life. chapter was bland but that was the purpose of this.

hayate was shocked by nagi’s win but it didnt take him long to go back to normal. that explains why he is such a workaholic. he forgets about his horrible past by keeping himself busy in work.

good memory i forgot ruka’s confession. her confession was bit selfish. her career was taking her away from living a normal life. hayate’s kindness and caring attitude made her want him. she felt it will make her happy. in the end it was same old cliche that she loved her career but just had not realized it. she was a awesome character but hopes of seeing her again is far less.

as for the ending i am not so sure but i like i developments so far.
